Boxing Workout – Get Motivated

2nd October 2015 By sneakpunch Leave a Comment

“Keep trying new techniques – you’ll eventually develop your boxing style. You should be constantly looking to learn.”

Boxing Workout – The best advice I ever received was “if training ever becomes boring – change it and try something new”.

As a professional boxer I was always training, even if there wasn’t an upcoming fight, as a bare minimum I was always in ‘tick over mode’. By this I mean that I was always ready to jump straight into full-on training mode – even if a fight was announced at short notice.  I’ve always been highly motivated in my boxing training simply because I wanted to win every fight. I always felt any loss would be detrimental to my career.

Having said that, it wasn’t always easy – being motivated doesn’t just happen automatically and there were certainly moments when I didn’t feel up for it.  Boxing is an individual pursuit, there’s no team there to back you up and there’s nowhere to hide. It was up to me to keep myself going. I found the best way to do this was to mix things up a bit as I trained by using different training methods, keeping it interesting and constantly pushing myself to the limit.

And I learned to love those tough days. Digging deep helped me prepare for any bad moments in the ring.  On a few occasions during my professional boxing career the fight simply didn’t go the way I’d planned.  Shit happens – even with comprehensive, successful boxing training and confidence running high, sometimes it just doesn’t work. These are the times you have to suck it up, focus and get back in the game. It’s moments like these that separate you from the rest – winners don’t accept failure.

When we planned the ‘Fight Yourself Fit’ boxing workout training programme, besides making it tough, we wanted it to be as varied as possible.  Boredom is the biggest killer of any workout plan. Fight Yourself Fit has the perfect balance between different boxing techniques and just enough repetition to give you the opportunity to “learn to box” as you train.

To me there’s nothing sweeter than throwing a great left hook and feeling that connection with the punchbag.  That perfect shot is the one you want to be doing everytime, it’s what you’re striving for – and with the Fight Yourself Fit boxing training plan you will master it.

I’ve incorporated individual boxing training techniques into a multitude of combinations.  Building a combination slowly the ‘left hook’ can eventually look like this – Jab > Slip > Sneak Punch > Right Cross > Left Hook.  The aim here is to give you confidence, teach you real boxing skills and never allow your training to become stale.

When I sparred with Roy Jones Jr in the mid-nineties he would spend the final 3 weeks of his boxing training camps almost exclusively sparring.  Everyday was different.  Everyday was a new scenario – and I had to second guess his every move.  That kept me on my toes!!

What students have said …..

There is seriously no time to get bored or feel sorry for yourself.  And I’m always quietly pleased with myself at the end of each boxing workout.  Guaranteed.  Job well done, another step closer.

I can now also appreciate the logic of 2-minute rounds.  2 minutes maximum effort, 1 minute rest.  However tough it gets – you know it’s only for 2 minutes.  I don’t think about a 30-minute boxing workout, I think about 2 minutes at a time.  2-minutes to aim for your best!
